Two students were injured when a dump truck and compact car collided Thursday morning in Miami County.

Shortly after 9 a.m., emergency crews responded to the intersection of U.S. 36 and Union-Shelby Road in Miami County on a report of a two vehicle injury crash.

As crews arrived, they requested Careflight to the scene, but due to weather conditions, the helicopter was unable to respond.

The driver of the car, Colin Hawes, 17, of near Fletcher, was pinned for about 20 minutes. He was extricated and taken by medics to an area hospital and is critical condition. He is a senior at Miami East Sr. High School.

The passenger in the car, Kaitlyn Hawes, 13, was transported to Children's Hospital. She is in the Intensive Care Unit with serious injuries. She is a seventh grader at Miami East Jr. High School.

The driver of the dump truck was identified as Joseph McCreary of East Liberty. He was unhurt.   The truck was loaded with 75,000 pounds of lime. The compact car pulled out in front of the dump truck and was struck broadside, according to initial information.
